That’s All, Mac

Bernie Mac died today at the age of 50. He was definetely not on that ambiguous mental list we all have in our subconscious of people that would not surprise us to boot up the news and see dead on any given day.

He was a little older than I thought he was, but still too damned young to cash in at the hands of a disease people survive all the time.

I’m at the point in my life that when I see celebrity deaths I generally judge the impact of them on me be determining how close I am to the age of the deceased. Fifty. Damn, I’m closer to 50 than I am 20.

Bernie Mac is one of those guys that I never thought much about. I never sought out any piece of entertainment because he was involved in it, but on the flip side I thought he was pretty damned entertaining. I never saw a lot of his TV work, but he was consistently entertaining in every film I saw him in. Most recently I believe I saw him in Oceans 13. His interesting and odd turn in Bad Santa always come to mind as well. He always has a funny charming screen presence.

It’s just a pisser, really. Who dies of Pnuemonia these days? Apparently Bernie Mac. Too damned young.
