3 Fantasy Football Fixes
It goes without saying that Fantasy Football has spread faster in America than Pamela Anderson’s legs at a trailer park filled with white trash rockers. However, there are some aspects about it that need to be changed. Here are three main reasons your Fantasy Football League sucks and how you can fix it.
1. Positions
Looking over the mock drafts in most Fantasy Football magazines makes me ill. Mostly, these leagues have 8-12 managers and that is reasonable, but the default rosters are pathetic:
1 QB; 3 WR; 2 RB; 1 TE; 1 K; 1 DEF (team)
This common default roster is pathetic and allows team managers to be completely devoid of any skill during drafting and still have a good team. An example is that with most leagues only having 10 people and 1 starting QB that allows each team to have 2 starting QB’s with 12 leftover. So? Well, the problem is that, with the exception of maybe the top 5 QB’s, there is not a huge drop off in starting QB’s scoring potential. In other words, if your brain was chocolate yet could not fill an M&M you will still have 2 decent QB’s to start.
Two QB’s should be the minimum starting requirement. This would force managers to pay attention to football rather than just Yahoo! or whatever league pick the next “best” available QB. For an extra dose of testosterone do 2 QB’s in a 12 person league. This leaves very little tolerance for injuries and makes the managers sweat our their picks with patience and skill rather than faking it as good as Adam’s Schefter’s passive aggressive laughing.
QB’s are just the beginning. To really get people to use their knowledge of the game and reward the guys who can find the “gems” throw in an additional spot for WR/RB and keep the bench to 7 or less. My palms just grew hair typing that.
2. Points
What do they always say?
“Hey, a touchdown is a touchdown!”
Uhh, apparently not in fantasy football..
Yahoo! rewards RB’s and WR’s with 6 points per touchdown while giving QB’s 4 points. Why? WHY! Can someone ask the teams Tom Brady, Tony Romo, or Peyton Manning just lit up for 40+ how much each of those touchdowns are worth? Holy fuck!
“But there are so many more passing Touchdowns.”
Who cares?! It’s fantasy football.
Another huge problem is what I like to call the Hines Ward syndrome. Hines Ward is a huge part of the Pittsburgh offense and has had 10+ catch games for less than 100 yards. He could have 10 first downs and win the game but if Joe Schmoe comes off the bench and gets a TD he’s worth just as much. Bullshit.
Combat this by having points for receptions. One point per reception will put Ward right up there at the top with the best of them. And if Ward grabs 10 catches for 100 yards and 2 td’s and is worth 50 pts then it is just damn well deserved.
Other adjustments…
• +5 for 300 yards passing, 100 yards rushing, 100 yards receiving
• +1 point per 15 return yards with a 3 point bonus at 150 yards
• (makes picking WR really interesting)
• +0.25 per completion
• -2 per interception (fumbles are -2 so INT’s should be that too)
• Fractional Points OK
• Negative Points OK
• No waivers: real men pay attention
This scoring system will essentially “de-emphasize” the overly important fantasy running back in favor of the guys who are making plays. This will level the playing field and make a good performance matter more at each position than just an average performance at running back. Everyone’s point totals go up but they all go up equally.
3. You
Yes, most of all, it’s more than likely YOU are the reason your league sucks. The media took this fantasy football thing to a new level of adoption but you are the one that are buying into them.
“Hey, that’s not me.”
Sure it is. Modeling your draft after NFL.com’s fantasty football magazine instantly put you into the suckfest pool where most fantasy managers hang out.
