Fantasy Football: The MAYBE Mid-Season Report
Everyone seems to have a different time to start their fantasy football playoffs so this might be mid-season for you or it might not be. To be honest, I don’t really care! Sit down, shut up, and read this damn article to find some interesting tid-bits out about where the fantasy players are ranking right now.
If you don’t know already, I pretty much hate default fantasy scoring so some of what I’m about to tell you might be more surprising than what i had already planned. Check out my Fantasy Football Fixes article and then come back.
Okay, so away we are…
Top 5 QB’s
- Drew Brees - New Orleans - 204.37 pts
- Tony Romo - Dallas - 188.26 pts
- Jay Cutler - Denver - 187.86 pts
- Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay - 182.78 pts
- Philip Rivers - San Diego - 176.06 pts
Brees at number 1? Not really unexpected. He’s been a great player on the field and in the fantasy realm for awhile now. The surprises to me are Cutler and Rivers. I knew Cutler was gonna have a good season but not anywhere near as good as it’s been. Fortunately, I picked him.
Peyton Manning? #11 Brett Favre? #8 Tom Brady? Well, get well soon!
Top 5 RB’s
- Reggie Bush - New Orleans - 179.90 pts
- Marion Barber - Dallas - 136.40 pts
- Frank Gore - San Francisco - 134.00 pts
- Clinton Portis - Washington - 130.60 pts
- Matt Forte - Chicago - 128.50 pts
Bush has 41 receptions already and Barber is carrying the load in Dallas. Gore and Portis have been consistently good but Matt Forte is an unexpected pleasant surprise to some.
#6? Darren Sproles! Peterson? #12 Tomlinson? #13
Top 5 WR’s
- Greg Jennings - Green Bay - 138.30 pts
- Larry Fitzgerald - Arizona - 135.60 pts
- Steve Breaston - Arizona - 130.40 pts
- Roddy White - Atlanta - 124.80 pts
- DeSean Jackson - Philadelphia - 122.60 pts
Jennings has been great even without Favre. Fitzgerald is always up there but Breaston has stepped up well in place of Boldin and is getting a lot of fantasy points from kick returns. Roddy Who? Never would have put White above TO, Wayne, and Moss during pre-season. DeSean Jackson just proves you can be an idiot and still play in the NFL.
Brandon Marshall from Denver would probably be Top 5 if you take away the 1 game suspension. TO? #14 R. Moss? #32, Ouch!
Top 5 TE’s
- Jason Witten - Dallas - 105.70 pts
- Chris Cooley - Washington - 73.50 pts
- Antonio Gates - San Diego - 67.20 pts
- Owen Daniels - Houston - 53.80 pts
- Bo Scaife - Tennessee - 53.60 pts
If you’re surprised with the Top 3 I think maybe you should start to actually watch football instead of just drafting a team. Daniels and Scaife are surprises with Scaife really benefitting from Kerry Collins playing QB for the Titans right now. After Witten’s 32 point gap most the field is pretty much even.
#6 - Gonzalez #7 - Scheffler #8 - Fasano
Top 5 DEF’s
- Philadelphia - 167.73 pts
- Green Bay - 136.47 pts
- Tennessee - 135.53 pts
- San Francisco - 135.13 pts
- Tampa Bay - 133.13 pts
Philadelphia has 21 sacks already this season which is pretty crazy. Green Bay, Tampa, and Tennessee all have double digit interceptions already and San Francisco has been decent all around.
Seattle, Detroit, and St Louis all only have 1 interception and Kansas City has only managed 3 sacks on the year. Great move in getting rid of Jared Allen, Herm Edwards!
Top 3 K’s
- Jason Elam - Atlanta - 70.00 pts
- Matt Prater - Denver - 64.00 pts
- Joe Nedney - San Francisco - 60.00 pts
Who really cares about kickers? The above kickers are tops with most of the rest being in the 50’s. That is about all that is relevant in this category. Matt Prater has made 4 50+ field goals but missed a 20-29er. Interesting, slightly.
Mid-Season Wrap Up
There are some pretty big surprises here. I knew Witten was going to be at the top of the tight ends but I never would have guessed 30+ points. That’s a really large gap and especially at that position. Reggie Bush is the biggest surprise of the season for me. Obviously, they want to get him the ball, but they are REALLY getting him the ball. His worth has partly gone up with the injuries of Colston and Shockey but this guy is flat out producing. Bush is 20th in the league for recieving yards at 361, he is second in the league with 41 receptions, has 239 yards rushing, and is averaging an absolutely ridiculous 26.9 yards a punt return. Bush has 8 total TD’s and is a strong push for Offensive Player of the Year.
