Buffalo Bills - Raising Idiocy to Lunacy

Marshawn Lynch has come on strong this year after his off-season “mis-hap” with a stolen, not stolen, SUV that fortunately fell way short of the “glove” story a former Bills RB is hopefully regretting.  On a team that has been fairly weak offensively Lynch is averaging an excellent 4.2 a carry and is over 1000 yards on the season.  This past Sunday he managed to totally out due himself with an absolutely staggering 6.0+ yards a carry on 21 touches and totaling 127 yards on the ground.  When you add-in receiving yards, Lynch was actually responsible for 46% of the total net yards the Bills had as a team.  So, why in the frackin’ Hell do the Bills throw the ball on 2nd and 5 with a tick over 2 minutes to go and the lead?

I thought about just skipping this small article because, really, who writes something over one play?  Well, I feel I need to.  People who watched the game or saw replays were witness to one of the worst play calls I’ve ever seen, heard of, or been a part of otherwise since I got involved in football at age 7.  That is nearly 20 years of play calls and this was probably the worst, ever.  This call was so bad that Charlie Weis was cracking jokes about it.

There are certain things that everyone could do at a job that no matter how long you’ve been there and how nice you are you should be canned on the spot.  Dick Jauron managed to do it Sunday.  Up 3 points and looking to run out the clock you run the ball.  You really run the ball when you’re tailback is scooting for 6 yards a carry.  Let’s see here, it was 2nd and 5 and at 6 yards a carry that is, oh, it’s ONE carry to get a first down.  Not only should they have been trying to run the clock out but they were on their own 26 yard line so they still needed to protect the ball.  As an offensive coordinator you need to decide when to take risks but rolling the dice with a QB who was responsible for 3 interceptions and fumbled 3 times make stupidity look sane.

Players mostly do what they are told and coached to do.  Peyton Manning, in this situation, would have just yelled over to his coach “I think I’m losing my hearing, did you call a pass?” and audibled to a dive up the middle with Mr. 6 Yards.  However, the Bills had feeble J.P. Losman at the helm who is just happy to still be collecting a paycheck.  That is why Dick Jauron should be fired for committing a sin of the highest order in football, losing a game for a team that just played their asses off with one play call.  One, very unnecessary, unwarranted, and should never be repeated ever in the history of football play call.

If there were ever a time for a team to have a TO like sideline rant, and it be justified, it would have been after that play.  Dick Jauron, do the honorable thing and go coach womens softball.

Here’s a link to the play on the Bills website.
