Who Pays the Watchmen?
Turns out we’ll be watching the Watchmen this March after all. Seems Warners and Fox have settled their dispute for an undisclosed amount of cash. Warners keeps distribution rights and Fox will receive an upfront monetary settlement and a portion of the box office. Here’s the official statement:
“Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture Watchmen in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography. Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith in defending against those claims Warner Bros. and Fox, like all Watchmen fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film’s March 6 release in theatres.”
So Fox gets a wad of money, Warners gets some extra publicity, the fans get their movie on time. Could it be for once everybody wins?

After all this, I just have the feeling the film is going to suck. What’s next? Let’s see if Zack Snyder can get his 3.5 hour cut into theaters. Hahaha, right. Right now, Snyder has indicated that they have enough to have a 4+ hour director’s cut for DVD. Can you imagine…if there’s a faithful to the novel 4+ hour cut of the film how MUCH would have to be trimmed to bring it in at even 2.5 hours. No way Warner will let it go much longer than that I think. Maybe this would have made a better HBO mini-series.
It’s still exciting though, I was no Watchmen junkie, just a passing interest really, but it just seems like every single still from the film that crops up online is so “right” you can tell exactly what scene from the novel it’s from. It’s got to be screaming to the real fans of the novel that this film adaptation is intended to stroke the fans.
In the end, I’m still holding out for a DARK KNIGHT RETURNS film adaptation. Who would make the perfect 60+ year old bitter, angry Batman?
