Fable II: Knothole Island Review

Fable II was, as many expected, not a very long game when following the storyline so any type of expansion is an improvement. The game also left players mixed up with having certain parts of outfits but not the rest and that just did not make sense. Well, now it’s time for it to make perfect sense and for Lionhead to make some more cent$. Behold, the Fable II: Knothole Island expansion is upon us as it’s shadow is cast upon our merciful credit cards!

What is it?
Knothole Island is a downloadable expansion for Fable II that costs 800 MS Points or about $8 US. This adds Knothole Island to the game which is a small and separate part of the world whose founders figured out how to control the weather. The town is currently frozen because they no longer have warriors strong enough to collect the weather keys from their temples to properly control the weather. Gordon, the great inventor, takes you to the island and back in his submarine for a mere 20 gold.

There are actually two downloads available on Xbox live for this game. One is the full expansion for 800 pts and the other is a free download that adds some of the new items and allows players to continue playing co-op with their friends. Players cannot play the Knothole Island expansion together unless they both own the premium expansion, however.

What’s there to do?
Not a ton, but for $8 it’s worth it for dedicated Fable II fans looking for a little more game. The plot is that your character is asked to retrieve the keys that allow control over the weather. Knothole used to have strong warriors that would venture into their caves and do this for them (the keys are kept in caves for safe keeping) but all their warriors are nancy boys now and they need help. So, there are 3 dungeons/caves to explore and conquer that add about 3 hours to the game.

Special items in the form of new weapons and clothing are a big part of this. There is a shop in town that will give you a “mystery box” in exchange for x number of whatever item they want. Say you trade 3 crunchy chicks and get a filet migon pie out of it. You get the idea.

Other than those things just buy all the shops.

Good/Bad?
I’d say there is some good here for dedicated fans but this seems like it should have been included in the game from the beginning. There are items included here that people really shouldn’t have to get an add-on to get. Also, yes, there are new items, augments, weapons, and more but it still doesn’t seem like that much. This is a little bit of help but a lot too late. One thing that bothers me a helluva lot is the insistence to have hidden bags of gold everywhere. All of sudden your dog find some treasure that is a whole 250 gold. Whoopee, I have 5,000,000+ gold! I really don’t understand why the game designers include all this gold around when there is not that much to buy. ADD MORE ITEMS!!!

Should I…?
Yes, if you’re a fan of Fable II, otherwise don’t bother. The enemies are not new or more difficult, there is not much to do, and it is really not that interesting. Fable II fans are probably itching for more game to play so this is an okay scratch until something else Fable comes along

I’ve been giving my kid crap about this because he’s been dying for the MS points to get it. He got it this weekend, but I’m continuing to piss him off by continually referring to it by asking him how “Butthole Island” is.
