Monday Mania - NFL News and Discussion

I’ve decided that there needs to be some “regular” columns around here (think Metamucil) so I will be writing a weekly “Monday Mania” column that is all about the NFL, its games, players, coaches, and anything else that I feel like throwing into the wind. This week I will do some brief summaries of the Cardinals triumph over the Eagles and the Steelers pounding of the Ravens followed with a series of musical compositions performed by Clint Eastwood (http://www.spike.com/blog/ten-things-you-didnt/72769). Well, maybe, maybe not. Why “Monday Mania?” Well, Monday Morning QB was taken (si.com), Manic Monday is poor chorus, and Monday Munchausen’s was just a mouthful, er, wait, too much House.

MMmmm, time for the beef in this meaty Monday sandwich.

My Bloody Valentine 3D - Bloody Bad but Bloody Fun

I admit that I have a history with the original My Bloody Valentine released in 1981. I must have watched it at least half a dozen times on HBO as I was making the boyhood journey through puberty with the help of Cable TV. Even as a kid I thought it was pretty damned silly. My first reaction upon hearing of the remake was “Why?” It was a cut rate slasher flick even then, one which I had assumed had long been forgotten. I’m a little surprised that I actually brought myself to see the remake. However, there I am wearing those damned glasses.

Be the Ball, Danny…For Only 200 Microsoft Points!

For whatever reason, I decided that I needed a good old fashioned golf game for my XBOX 360. I was harkening back to the good old days of playing Links on my MAC back in the 90s. Golf video games are important to me, a man who has played real golf once in his life and shot a respectable 85…on the front 9. After about a week of playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour I was somewhat shocked by what Microsoft was offering me as a player through XBOX live.

Battlestar Galactica: Sometimes a Great Notion

It’s an amazing thing how a show can change direction so suddenly so many times over several years and still maintain its momentum. In the case of Battlestar Galactica we once again leave a 60 minute block of time in a completely different place than we started it. Where we left the mid-season finale asking ourselves “now what” with Sometimes a Great Notion we’re getting a clear picture that this show has no intention to “wind down” quietly. They start to this string of final episodes with one dizzying revelation after another.

Who Pays the Watchmen?

Turns out we’ll be watching the Watchmen this March after all. Seems Warners and Fox have settled their dispute for an undisclosed amount of cash. Warners keeps distribution rights and Fox will receive an upfront monetary settlement and a portion of the box office. Here’s the official statement:

“Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture Watchmen in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography. Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith in defending against those claims Warner Bros. and Fox, like all Watchmen fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film’s March 6 release in theatres.”

So Fox gets a wad of money, Warners gets some extra publicity, the fans get their movie on time. Could it be for once everybody wins?

NFL Conference Champships - Analysis - What team looks like recent champ?

This is the first time that I have to admit to being completely wrong *cough* on something but the last round of the playoffs, boy did I suck harder than Bum Joe Don and his stink-sucking job on Mad TV. That’s right, I went a drastic “O-fer” and absolutely none of my picks were right. Sure, the Titan’s definitely should have won their game and the Panthers will probably not have another game that bad for 10 years but that doesn’t matter.

Let’s move on to this weekend now, shall we? The match ups in these two games are very interesting with at least one team reminding me (almost eerily) of a recent Super Bowl Champion. Find out why…

Ricardo Montalban: “KAHHHHHHN!” is Dead

Ricardo Montalban is one of the most unique and memorable actors of the past 50 years or so. His roles in film and television cross the entire spectrum of entertainment. For me, he has the honor of not only appearing in more than one of my top 20 or so favorite movies of all time, but also in one of my bottom five most hated films ever.

Frakkin’ Cylons: Galactica Face of the Enemy Review

The Geek-o-meter levels are rising for Battlestar Galactica fans as we approach the beginning of the end for one of the best shows on television for the last four years. Unlike the cheap and sleazy webisode series of some shows like Heroes, the 10-part Galactica appetizer Face of the Enemy has concluded and displayed all the quality and thoughtfulness of a full regular season episode.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Day 2 Wrap-Up; Eagles over Giants - Steelers out Chargers

Eagles 23 - Giants 11

I’m not really sure if I’m just paying more attention this year or if things are actually just this bad.  I have yet to watch a game that has not been decided by a team shooting themselves in the foot.  After watching the Titans and the Panthers fumble and throw their games away I was expecting a “return to normalcy” with a Tom Coughlin lead coach and I couldn’t have been more disappointed.

The game started off well for the Giants with a big kick return and a 4th and 2 conversion.  However, the Giants were only able to get a field goal out of it. New York’s D came out really hot and held the Eagles to a 4th and 21 but there were two flags on the punt return making the Giants start on their own 12.

NFL Divisional Playoffs Day 1 Wrap-Up - Ravens best Titans - Cardinals destroy Panthers

Wow, just wow. I need to stop picking teams since I think I’m just jinxing them at this point. This was the first day of play to determine who would go to the conference championship games. Would it be the Panthers, Ravens, or their rivals? Well, if you read my predictions you would have already figured this out.

Ravens 13 - Titans - 10

A game that was totally predictable as a defensive struggle. Both teams started their initial drives punting and that pretty much was most of the game. The first half was not totally stale with the Titans shifty rookie, Chris Johnson, burning up the Ravens for some big gains and putting the first points on the board with a slick scamper around the right side for 6 points. It really was looking like the Titans were going to be able to continue running the ball.
