LOST: This Place is Death. Charlotte Bites it.
While I’m generally enjoying the hell out of Lost this season up to and including this week’s episode This Place is Death, my cynical nature is starting to pick apart all of the things that seem like they could go awry with this show the rest of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not making any past judgment, but understand that I’m a Lost latecomer. I literally watched 4 years of the show in a very short period of time last year to get into this mode. Unfortunately, I kind of started to build my Lost fanaticism during the period where I was really excited about how great the first season of Heroes had been, and that show is a live example of how a show can go down the water closet in very short order.
Beyond that, for those of you that hadn’t pegged the gray haired chic as Faraday’s mother in the last few weeks then you’ve got to be slipping. She was the only logical choice. Also, I still haven’t quite figured out if Desmond is included in the “has to go back to the island” combo package that’s required to…to…to do whatever the hell it is that they have to do to fix the island or to fix whatever it is that is wrong and whoever it’s wrong with. Hell, maybe they just need Dr. Jack to fix the nosebleeds. Fat lot of good that will do Charlotte now.
Speaking of Charlotte, let’s revisit her big reveal this week before she kicked the bucket.
First, it would have been more of a “shocking” reveal that Faraday himself had been this “crazy man” who had warned her not to return to the island had there not been that inexplicable brief flashback earlier this season with Faraday as the Dharma janitor from the 80s or whatever the hell he was.
Second, she has a burning recollection all of her life of a man that warns to never return to the island or she will DIE. Then, years later she signs up with the Widmore cruise to the Island of weirdness where she’s teamed up with that same crazy guy and that doesn’t seem to give her any pause to reconsider the trip? Oh well, let’s go ahead and just add her body on to the list. Anybody keep a body count over the last 4 plus seasons?
Too much to think about I guess.
This week’s State of Lost report:
• I Liked Drunk Dad Better. Okay, I’m just getting weirded out by this whole twist with Christian, Jack’s father being some key component to the island insanity. After Locke runs into him at the cabin last season my tendency was to speculate that this is simply another illusion of sorts. Looks like Jack’s dad hanging around Jacob’s cabin probably is something other than a strange island manifestation. Guess we cleared this up once and for all in this episode with the “Say Hi to my son” line. I’m just trying to reconcile drunken, unfaithful Jack’s dad torn and in turmoil pouring his heart out to Sawyer in the bar in Australia with this “I’ve really been a key component to this whole supernatural mystery” version of Jack’s dad we are getting now.
• Prego. I also still can’t reconcile a mere 16 year difference between short, chubby, pregnant, youthful Danielle and the aging, haggard, tall, thin Danielle that tied Sayid up in the first season and met her ugly end last year. On a side note, loved the arm coming off as they tried to tear the French dude from the smoke monster. Classic TV dismemberment. Bravo.
• This Place is DEATH! Not to dwell back to Charlotte again, but where does she get off warning Jin not to let Sun come back to the island because THIS PLACE IS DEATH when she walked willingly right back into the thick of it herself. I never liked Charlotte, so her death didn’t really mean too much in the grand scope of things to me. If the chic can’t survive a couple of nosebleeds she should have been more diligent about taking her blood clotting medicine.
• Place Your Bets. Okay, you know I really don’t give a flying leap who it ends up being and we’re probably well into Season 6 before this gets answered anyway, but it’s time to start putting your money on who ends up with Kate. Sawyer or Jack? I’d have to say I’m rooting for Sawyer. Again, don’t misunderstand this as me actually caring WHO she ends up with. I’m guessing most of the women viewers are rooting for Jack. Personally, Jack’s really turned into an asshole over the last season. After all his holier than though shit all that time, he turned into the leading advocate for THE LIE that screwed up their lives. He couldn’t handle the pressure and now he’s the leading advocate for convincing all these people who’s lives HE helped screw to follow a man who is responsible for countless deaths and misdeeds back to the hell-hole of weirdness that is the island. The heck with him, I say. Put your bets on the table now. Jack or Sawyer? Better yet, I’d say there’d have to be pretty reasonable odds on one or more those three ending up dead by the end of the series run.
• This Week’s Spin Off Idea: Crisis Management with Jack Shephard. Matthew Fox spins off into his own series. Deciding to turn his back on his surgical career, he becomes a professional life counselor. Each week, Jack engages in family therapy sessions where he gives detailed and insightful instruction on how to use facial expression to express all the emotions that are key to handling a serious issue.
In the pilot episode he reaches out to a couple who are dealing with an unruly and difficult teenage son. Through use of intense facial expressions , eye rolling and looking away in frustration and despair he helps the parents learn to have meaningful interaction with their son. The son ends up finally agreeing to turn over a new leaf after extremely effective use of eye rolling makes him realize how difficult he making the life of his parents.
There we are, I give This Place is Death one HUGE dismembered arm up! Bring on some more supernatural soap opera nastiness next week!
