Monday Mania - Feb 16th, 2009 - Favre, Garcia, Taylor, Peppers, Morgan and More!
Most of the NFL is prepping for things like the combine while the media side of it is trying to make soap opera’s out of any type of story that gets to them. I’ll skip trying to make a soap opera out of stuff and just get right down to the nitty gritty of where I think some players are going to end up like Garcia and Peppers and there is a picture of a super hot chick in this column as well. Yeah, go ahead and click the read more just for that!
Player News
Brett Favre, Marshawn Lynch, Jeff Garcia, Julius Peppers, Fred Taylor, Dan Morgan
Happy Retirement, Brett!
Well, the time has finally come and it looks like it’s really time to say goodbye to Favre. I said last season that I wasn’t so sure about the retirement though I wasn’t predicting he’d be playing for the Jets either. To anyone who somehow doesn’t think Favre isn’t one of the best to play the game I think you’re crazy and can stop watching football. It was not often “pretty” but it could be somewhat magical in Green Bay with their gun slinger at the helm. To anyone who might think Favre was “terrible” in New York or thinks it tarnishes his career they are also crazy. Don’t forget that he was hurt in those last 3 or 4 games with a shoulder injury and I don’t care what anyone says a guy like Favre is not going to pull himself out of the game. Apparently, the head coach didn’t see enough to pull him either. The fact of the matter is that he had a solid season just fall apart at the end but it was not that bad that Favre is not still “Favre.” To the Hall with you!
Marshawn Lynch is Still an Idiot
Last season we had to hear about this idiot’s antics involving his “Luxury SUV.” C’mon, let’s just get it right, it’s gotta be an Escalade with at least DUBS on it and probably lots of chrome. Anyway, he was investigated for a hit and run of the pedestrian variety which he denied for awhile. Yes, he denied hitting someone walking across the street and then reached a plea that manifested into a $100 fine. He must of really learned his lesson with that one. Now, Lynch was arrested after some cops recognized who he was and for some reason searched his vehicle. Lynch was booked on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and retained a lawyer. I know these guys are loaded with money but how many of them really have to have a loaded weapon on them all the time? What exactly is Lynch doing in his spare time that he needs to have a concealed weapon that was loaded.
Garcia Hitting the Road
The Bucs are reformulating this off-season with waiving Jon Gruden and I’m sure it’s not going to stop there or at least not with Jeff Garcia. Garcia will be 39 soon and is scheduled to be a free agent. Apparently, that is right on schedule with Garcia saying he was informed that he will not be re-signed by Tampa. It wasn’t that long ago Garcia had the Bucs into the playoff picture and let’s not forget the turn around he led in Philly when McNabb went down. He really doesn’t get a lot of praise but he has been a career winner who can ignite a team. Minnesota is a team that could really use Garcia while they try to find and develop a real QB. If the Vikings get Garcia to run the show they just might be headed to the big game.
For anyone that doesn’t know… the hot chick is Garcia’s wife, Carmella Garcia - seiously! Click for full size.
Julius Peppers Wants Out!
Too many rumors got started on this one at the beginning to let it alone. Carolina canned their defensive co-ordinator and then Peppers comes out and says he wants to go play somewhere else. This was all followed by a report stating the D-Coordiantor was gone because of Peppers (and others) complaining! What a frickin’ soap opera! Peppers is now taking the position of being “polite” and that he doesn’t have any ill-feelings but is just looking for a new place to go. Peppers could be a guy that a team like the Chiefs might want to help boost their defense quickly.
Fred Taylor Released
Did anyone not see this coming? Jacksonville has been slowly paying less attention to Taylor as one of their main guys for quite awhile. It was originally a complaint that he was “hurt all the time” but even when he wasn’t hurt the Jags weren’t using him. I think that Taylor is a guy that will find a home pretty quickly since he is a solid vet that shouldn’t break the bank. Kansas City, Seattle, and Cleveland could be fits.
Dan Morgan Comes Marching In
The Saints are welcoming Dan Morgan back to the team. Morgan had retired after a series of concussions and a partial achillies tear. This could be a huge plus for the Saints whose defense couldn’t stop a kindergarten cheerleading squad last year. Don’t be surprised if he’s healthy Morgan earns comeback player of the year and gets well over 100 tackles. Let’s not forget Morgan was credited with 25 tackles when the Panthers played in the Super Bowl. 10 tackles is a good day, 15 tackles is a great day, 25 tackles is unheard of.
Weird NFL Note of the Week
Cincinnati has placed the franchise tag on their kicker, Shayne Graham. I’m just not sure I get this. They have T.J. Houshmanzadeh to resign or let walk since their policy is that they don’t keep recievers over 30 (seriously) and it’s a damn kicker! What a waste! If you cannot resign a kicker long term quickly then you shouldn’t be a GM or Owner in the NFL. Oh wait, the laundry list of reasons Mike Brown shouldn’t be an owner in the NFL is a mile long so I guess he thought he could just add to his infamy. I might be a Cowboys fan but wouldn’t it be something if the Cowboys released TO and then picked up TJ. Hmmmmmm…probably just add that to the list of things that aren’t going to happen.
Non-Football Sports Talk
Phelps is not going to be charged in the pot incident according to the police. Wait, I thought these guys were charging other kids at the party for various things and Phelps is getting a pass? I suppose they could argue he was smoking oregano. Well, since it is Phelps he probably was smoking oregano and didn’t know it while just dropping a fat wad of cash on it anyway. What in the hell would Phelps be doing if he wasn’t a freak of nature in the pool?
Shaq and Kobe managed to get along well enough to get co-MVP honors at the NBA All-Star game. At least Shaq’s performance this year on the court is a hell of a lot better than his performance in his rap where he asked Kobe “How his ass tastes.”
Hyper’s Thoughts
- Shaq, what the hell was that?
- I’m thinking Arby’s right now…mmmmm
- Al Davis and Mike Brown should have an NFL worst owner show down
- The recession is going to “cost” the Cowboys millions when it comes to the naming rights to their stadium
- Does Kobe know how Shaq’s ass taste? One night and a couple gallons of Jack… ok, puke
- I need to start this column on Sunday’s =)
- Michael Vick could be Raider material
