Monday Mania on Tuesday - Feb 24th, 2009 - McDouche, Combine, Warner, Free Agents

What is going on in the world? There are some pretty high class free agents that are on the market as of today and will be solid contributors if not key players for other teams next year. That little combine thing has also been going on and there are definitely some notables. Of course there are other things like what’s going on with Kurt Warner, what is matter with the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings. Oh, let’s not forget that D. McNabb needs to realize he’s part of the problem in Philadelphia and not the solution.

Free Agency
I really didn’t think it was going to happen but the headliner for free agency is definitely Marvin Harrison’s release from the Indianapolis Colts. Harrison has played his whole career in Indianapolis compiling over 14,500 yard receiving with eight 1,000+ yard years and three years over 1,500 yards (Rice only had 4). Harrison is a guy that has fallen from grace the last couple years due to injury but appeared to regain his form when finally healthy last season. I’m not really sure where he might end up with names like Philadelphia, Tennessee, Jacksonville, and others that are all in need. I guess if Harrison went to Philly he won’t have to drive so far to be accused of shooting someone. The Colts really need to resign Jeff Saturday but look for his possible dive into Free Agency.

Arizona needs Kurt Warner and Kurt Warner needs Arizona. So, why is it that with Arizona allegedly offering at least 10 million a year the two haven’t worked things out? First, I will say, I’ve been a huge Warner supporter even when he stupidly played with the broken hand and the supposedly fine broken thumb. Warner could step in just about anywhere and do well but he has a great thing going in Arizona and he should be looking to finish his career there. There isn’t another team in the league right now with Arizona’s firepower other than Indianapolis and I hear that job is taken. I have a feeling Arizona might be asking for a year longer than Warner wants to commit but if lucky 13 is going to be playing next year it will be in the land of sun.

Minnesota and Cleveland are both being pretty stupid in their QB search. The Vikings are interested in Michael Vick and are just signing Sage Rosenfels. I just don’t get it. Rosenfels isn’t a bad QB per say but he isn’t a very good one either or at least has not been. I’m not sure why Minnesota keeps hesitating to really go after a guy that will put them over the top. If they bring in Michael Vick the ship will look good for a while and then plummet when they realize if they want to run the ball they already have the best back in football. Cleveland is being stupid as well. There is now a good chance Derek Anderson will be staying in a Browns uniform next year since the Browns don’t want to trade him. Are you kidding me?! Look, I know these guys are not stocks but Anderson’s value is at its peak and it’s time for Boy Wonder, Brady Quinn, to take the plate. Trade Anderson, pick up a veteran backup like Jon Kitna and move along.

Also, everyone be on the lookout on the news wires for an Anquan Boldin update. He had told the Cardinals they had until today to reach an agreement.

Cuts - Kwame Harris, Justin Griffith - Oakland, Marvin Harrison - Indianapolis, Lawyer Milloy - Atlanta, Chris Baker - New York Jets, Marcus Washington - Washington.

Combine
Ah, the combine. What a marvelous invention of media glorification and job creator. Yes, the combine has created a lot of jobs for kids who want to find an edge over their competition through 40-yard dash training, special workouts, and even interview prepping. I think it’s more dog and pony than anything but some numbers can’t be disputed.

- Good Surprises -

Beanie Wells (Ohio State - RB) was clocked faster than Knoshown Moreno (Georgia - RB) with a 4.59 40 to Moreno’s 4.61. This is more of a plus for Wells who is more of a bruising back and has never been noted for his speed. Both are good enough numbers.

Aaron Curry (Wake Forest - LB) has been noted to be the best linebacker in the draft before his workout and after running a 4.56 I will be very very surprised if he isn’t one of the first players off the board. Curry is 6′2″ 254 lbs and is beating the likes of Wells and Moreno. This kid can play somewhere on the field, period.

Offensive Guard Louis Vasquez (Texas Tech - OG) caught some eyes when he completed 39 reps on the bench press at 225 lbs. Vasquez is huge at 6′5″ 333lbs and out pressed all other offensive linemen by 5 reps.

Pat White (West Virginia - QB) had a real good day throwing the ball and also ran a smokin’ 4.55 40. Someone is going to pick this kid up. White definitely should be picking up some rep next year in the NFL.

- Bad Surprises -

Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech - WR) has a stress fracture and is delaying surgery. This is a minor injury and requires about 10 weeks of healing. The bad part, to me, is that he should just go get this fixed instead of delaying. Most scouts won’t think much of this injury and he’ll still draft high.

Andre Smith (Alabama - T), the heralded offensive tackle, apparently just up and left early without telling anyone. He would later say he should have told his group leader but he should have known better.

The media still going on and on and on about 40 times. Yeah, I think they can be important but with how it’s reported that “So and so will not be a X rounder now” is total bullshit. This was plenty evident by how embarrassingly wrong Mel Kiper Jr. was about last year’s draft. I guess this isn’t as much of a surprise as it is just bad.

D. McNabb = D. McDouche

My opinion of Donovan McNabb swayed from one side to the other very quickly with TO battle. At first, I, like most people, thought McNabb had nothing but “class” and distinguished himself. This was after the Rush Limbaugh comments that the media made McNabb out to be more than what he is because he is black. I saw the live broadcast of that and no one really mentions that Tom Jackson, black, agreed. I mention that because my opinion of McNabb swayed instantly after TO proclaimed the Eagles would have been better with Brett Favre. McNabb’s response wasn’t that he thought different because he was better than Favre but rather that TO’s comment was a low blow because Favre was a white QB not a black QB like Michael Vick. How did the media not go off on this guy? McNabb, the guy who felt so victimized by Limbaugh’s mundane comments, is blindly admitting a racial conflict in this? Favre is infinitely better than Vick so don’t even go there.

Now, McNabb is really showing his true “class” in the off-season and, honestly, making me think TO might have actually had a small amount of warrant to his grief in Philly. McDouche started the off-season by stating that the offense did its job in Arizona and it was the defense that did not get it done. Woah, what? Not only did the defense get them there but talk about throwing your teammates under the bus! He has followed that act up with saying he’s not going to negotiate a contact extension with McNabb unless Philly brings in some talent. Where does this guy have a leg to stand on? He is part of the problem in Philadelphia, not the solution. McNabb is running a West Coast Offense that requires dinks and dunks and is a lifetime 58% passer. That is madness! That is the equivalent of Shaq’s free throw ability if not worse. In addition to shotty performance on the field with all this crap he’s about to become a distraction off of it. How quickly McNabb forgets how good the team was with Jeff Garcia at the helm. Speaking of which, if the Eagles are smart (don’t worry, they aren’t) they’d drop McNabb’s cruddy act and pick up Garcia and get Harrison while they are at it.

My Spider Sense listening to Bill Polian’s press conference tells me the Colts aren’t going to make a serious effort to resign Jeff Saturday. As painful as it is being from Indy, I’m not sure that I can fault them for releasing Harrison. I love the guy, but it’s probably the best business move. That’s a lot of money to free up to continue to work on the defense.
