Monday Mania - TO, A-Roid, Warner, Boldin and More!

The world of sports was lit on fire over the weekend by the amazing competition that is the Pro Bowl. Ha! Yeah, right! Actually, the sports world cannot shut up about A-Roid, er, A-Rod. I will be getting to my take on Alex Rodriguez and the rest of that “steroid thing” along with other topics. Lots of stuff to hit on including Todd Haley, TO, Pacman, Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin, and more. You gotta keep reading to put the “man” in Mania on this weeks edition of Monday Mania here on Deviant Knowledge.

Push: Hey, They Forgot to Film the Last 10 Pages of the Script!

Alright already, I picked on Push a month or so ago because the trailers bore a rather striking conceptual resemblance to the television show Heroes. I still stand by the assessment that I made in the article Push Movie Trailer: Didn’t This Used to Be a TV Series Called Heroes? In any case, for those that stay true to the current unbridled mess that is Heroes, I’ve spent the cash for you so you can maintain your integrity and not pay for Push if you don’t want to. Either unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your point of view, Push is generally better than what NBC is dishing up on Monday nights recently.

Pink Panther 2: Steve Martin’s Early 2009 Oscar Contender! Nah, Just Kidding.

Ever since Steve Martin decided to resurrect the Pink Panther franchise he’s taken quite an internet beating from the unwashed masses that are internet talkbackers and bloggers. While admittedly, from the initial trailers for the first of these two films, I didn’t exactly pin “high concept” art on my assessment of where the film was going to go, but I wouldn’t exactly pin that tag on the original Peter Sellers films that Blake Edwards built the series on. So how painful is the Steve Martin version of the franchise?

Galactica: Blood on the Scales - The Reckoning Comes

The fruits of Earth. The goal of the surviving humans for the first three and a half seasons was to find the elusive lost brothers of the human race. Adama believed that Earth was simply a fairy tale or a myth. In hindsight, it would have probably been better if it had just been a myth.
On that note, I’m not sure if the chill that accompanied the final moments of Blood on the Scales was due to the phenomenal conclusion to this particular chapter in the saga and the sobering conclusion the stories of Felix Gaeta and Tom Zarek or if it came from the damned cold draft coming down the flu of my fireplace that I forgot to close. In any case, I don’t think the show has ever been more successful.

Review: Star Wars the Force Unleashed

Duh duh… du du du daaaa duhhhh du du du daaaa duhhhhh du du du daaaa. Ahem, sorry about that. It was just my excitement for all things Star Wars trying to build up this game at least a little bit. The Force Unleashed (360) can now be picked up for about $30 used which wouldn’t be a bad buy if it wasn’t so damn mind numbing. Oh, snap, maybe I just blew the rest of the review! Well, I think not since this game actually starts off well then collapses nearly as much as the Clone Wars movie.

I will open this up by saying I have not yet finished this game. I don’t have 8+ hours a day to play games, though I’ll take the job if anyone is hiring, so there will be times that a game just isn’t worth it. There is not a plan to make this a habit and I will, rightfully, update the review if I finish the game and have a sudden change of heart but I am about 2/3 of the way done and can’t really take much more.

Killzone 2: Pay to Play

After lots of hype and a questionable trailer a few years back at E3, Killzone 2 for the PS3 is just about to hit store shelves. Does it live up to the hype? Are the graphics everything they promised? Is the gameplay as exciting as they claim? You only have to play the demo to find out.

And that’s gonna cost you sixty bucks.

LOST - The Little Prince or The Pain in the Ass Rugrat?

I guess it’s a necessary evil to the development of the plot that we had to take Claire’s rugrat to the mainland. It was an intriguing plot twist during season 4 as the dirty laundry of the Oceanic Six got aired through the flash forwards. Unfortunately, when you utilize a plot device of that magnitude you’re eventually going to have to face it head on at some point. In other words, we’ve utilized Aaron as device to complicate the lives of Kate and Jack and to provide motivations for those characters to have make certain decisions. But now as we flow into the next stage of this story, we have to deal with the tangible character of the kid without severely complicating the show’s ability to generate action and pacing.

Heroes - A Clear and Present Danger. It Has to Get Better from Here, Right?

I think we can safely say the most entertaining moments on television involving the cast of Heroes lately came in the form of a couple of cute promos during the Superbowl Sunday night. By the way, in the grand tradition of this past Friday’s Galactica, once again we end on a cliffhanger that is IMMEDIATAELY resolved as they launch into the following week’s preview that shows everyone survives the plane crash. THANKS, NBC!

Monday Mania - SuperBowl Extended Edition

No matter how you slice or dice it Super Bowl 43 was a full 60 minutes of hard fought athletic competition. The Steelers came into the game after finishing the toughest schedule in football 12-4 and the Cardinals had one of the weakest schedules yet finished 9-7. This pairing was very unlikely and many experts predicted a shalacking of those Red Birds from Arizona though I’d say ‘those‘ experts probably aren’t very good at their jobs. If you are a Jim Rome listener you know when I say the Jungle Karma was even and the playing field was neutral. Super Bowl 43, while somewhat sloppy, was an excellent show.

Taken - Simple Title. Simple Film.

For those that are familiar with the process of how a movie gets the studio “greenlight” you are probably aware of what a “treatment” is. For those that don’t know, it’s a brief summary of the film being proposed. Generally, it’s a little longer and more detailed than an outline but not as detailed and long as a script. They can be anywhere from a brief few paragraphs to several pages long. In the case of Taken, the treatment could easily have been written on the back of a matchbook. That’s not always a bad thing, sometimes simpler is better. In Taken’s case, I’m just not really sure.
