Monday Mania - March 9th, 2009 - Bills get T-Owned; Pats at it Again; Sign these guys!

Another week, another big move in free agency. It’s this time of year, the off-season, that it’s obvious why the NFL is such a huge draw; the game never stops! Without a single football game being played fans all over the league are cheering and booing with all the things that “their” teams are doing. The addition or subtraction of just one player can cause a huge stir and even drive ticket sales. This week it’s the Buffalo Bills making the waves…

Bills T-Owned

At the end of last week I wrote about how Terrell Owens owned Jerry Jones and himself at the same time in the column “T-Owned.” It wasn’t long after that when the Buffalo Bills felt like they needed to make a big move. In that column I mentioned the Ravens as my top choice for Owens to sign with. The Ravens wide reciever’s aren’t that great and supposedly TO is all chummy with Ray Lewis now. Well, Dick Jauron (huge idiot), went out and got T-Owned himself.

It’s not a bad deal for Buffalo, really. 1 year - $6.5 million. TO will, probably, be just fine his first year there and try to get an extension. I think my only real problem is that I don’t think that the Bills are going to really get their moneys worth on the field. I’m sure that off the field the money has already started rolling in with number 81 red jerseys and ticket sales but I don’t think the Bills will properly use TO and I think he’s about done. While he was in Dallas TO average about 12 drops a year. This number is only going to climb in Buffalo and will be combined with a receiver that can’t get open. I’m not quite sure he’ll go over 1000 yards receiving.

More Signings

Running back Kevin Jones will be staying with the Bears. This is very good for the Bears who now have a very good vet backup to go with their young starter, Matt Forte. Look for Jones to get more field time this year as last year he was coming off of a knee injury.

Laveranues Coles signs with the Bengals. I just don’t get it. Mike Brown, the Bengals GM, said he had a policy against signing 30+ year old recievers and didn’t fight hard enough to keep his own 30+ reciever in Houshmanzadeh so he signs another 30+ receiver. Coles not only isn’t as good as Housh but he’s inconsistent and has a big mouth. Really, a fitting pickup for the Bengals. Oh, let’s not forget he’ll be making $7 million a season, or $500,000 more than TO’s one year deal. I think I could convince the Bengals to sign Lynn Swan out of retirement for big money at this point.

Ray Lewis is sticking with the Ravens. I might have mentioned this before but I just really think this is a very big signing. The Ravens defense will surely start to sign younger guys this season with the loss of older vets like Bart Scott so the leadership Lewis will give them to start their careers will be fantastic. It will help the defense come together quicker and stay a unit.

Chris Simms has signed with the Denver Bronco’s. Interesting is really the word here. Simms is a guy that could have stayed in Tennessee and competed for the starting job once Collins was gone but he went to Denver instead? I really don’t think the Broncos new coach likes or trusts Jay Cutler very much. Look for this to bring quite a bit of “who’s the starter” controversy in the future.

The entire league let Shawn Springs sign with the Patriots. Idiots! Springs still has a lot of spring in his step and is going to make that defense instantly better. I can’t believe no one else could work out a deal with him before the Belichick Empire snagged him.

Not Signed Yet

Jeff Garcia. I keep mentioning him but no one seems to be biting. Detroit, Minnesota, San Francisco, Chicago and some others all could benefit from having Garcia on their squad. Really, Garcia still performs very well on the field so unless he’s asking for a ton of dough I don’t get why he hasn’t signed yet.

Byron Leftwich. About the same boat as Garcia though not mobile and slightly less accurate but he’s a lot younger. How in the hell is he still a free agent? I could name 5 or 6 teams he could start for and yet he’s not signed? Gimmie a break. If Coles can get $7 million from anyone then this guy needs a home. Watch for the Titan’s to possibly move on him.

Cato June, Derrick Brooks, Zach Thomas, and Donnie Edwards. All linebackers over 30 except June who is 29. Thomas probably had the best year of all of them last year but they can all still play and be productive. Probably the only one I’d be leary of is Edwards but the rest are a lot of value.

The last big one to me is former Bears safety Mike Brown. Brown was an excellent player when healthy and still could have 5+ years in his playing free safety at the age of 31. Brown is still a solid starter in the league and could re-emerge for whoever signs him.

Non-NFL News

Ford and the UAW have reached a new contract agreement. Why should anyone care? I just think it’s important since it’s looking more and more like the name Henry started is going to be the last American car company standing. The contract is a huge help to Ford which allows them to pay a lot of retirement benefits in stock instead of cash. I really hope this can work out for both sides.

Ford also was the only one of the Big Three not to take a bail out. They really didn’t need it and are doing their best to sort through their own mess. It’s really good to hear since GM and Chrysler really don’t seem to give a fuck. So, next time your buying a vehicle that is not Honda, Toyota, or Nissan look for a Ford.
