Monday Mania - Vick +$10 mill?; Ward Rule; 18 Games?; More…

I really thought this was going to be a boring week in the NFL.  Everyone and their mother seemed a lot more concerned about the man-child, Blake Griffith, taking on UNC.  Live and learn because while it might not have been the most exciting week of the NFL there are still some crazy topics out there and this week I really do mean crazy!  Yeah, we’ll get to the NCAA tourney and how well/poorly I’m doing but this weeks news is about as elegant as smashing butterflies with a sledge hammer if I’m being honest.

Michael Vick
vick125It’ll soon be time to start hearing more and more about this clown again.  This guy is not only a psychopath(yes, anyone who can do that to an animal is psychotic) but also delusional.  According to Vick’s bankruptcy filings the guy is planning on earning $10 million a year or better!  It’s not impossible that Al Davis would be that stupid but I really can’t see anyone hiring him for anything other than maybe double league minimum for two years to start. After that, he’s going to be into his 30’s and still a shitty QB and crap fest of a person.  He did say he was considering playing running back but he’s only going to get killed there.  I’m starting to wonder if he has been fishing for a position as an AIG Exec.

The Ward Rule
Crackbacks are some of the most dangerous and violent blocks in all of football and it’s great the NFL is finally making them a little safer.  Last year, Hines Ward blasted Keith Rivers (see vid) on a crack-back block and broke the guys jaw.  It was technically a clean hit but I think you can manage to land that hit somewhere other than the persons face.  After all, you are blindsiding this guy so it’s a free shot to land wherever you want.  Apparently, the NFL pretty much agrees and now has put in the rule not eliminating the crack-back but just how you can deliver that block.  Players are no longer allowed to make initial contact to another players face or helmet when cracking-back.  Fairly long overdue.  It’s going to be interesting to see this enforced and how often it is really called.  I really, REALLY, this they need to extend this  type of rule to defensive players making first contact with their helmet.  The “Brian Dawkins” rule is what they could call this one.  Dawkins is INFAMOUS for leading with his head and I can’t believe he hasn’t broken his own neck at this point.  Blatantly leading with the helmet is not good for anyone in the sport and needs to be eliminated.  The helmet is designed and worn for protection not an attack.  Great new rule.

18 Games?
Roger Goodell is trying to slip a Nicky on everyone with this 17 or 18 game stuff.  Goodell is, unfortunately, taking a very “fan-like” approach to the proposal of a 17th and maybe 18th game.  Basically, the justification is that if there is 1 pre-season dropped that leaves room for 1 more regular season same goes if they drop two.  Goodell, c’mon man, are you serious?  It’s been a long while since the real starters have played in all 4 games or even two full games.  Maybe, MAYBE, if you combine all 4 games a starter has played 1 full one but it’s not at the same level of a regular season game.  I’m just not sure of the importance of the extra games, aside from the money of course.  Just a couple more games for players to get hurt in.  I mean, if they decide to do this at least expand the game day rosters a couple of spots (or five).

Ryan Moats
Texans Colts Football“To protect and serve” is the way I always heard it but that’s defintely not the way it went down for Ryan Moats.  If you somehow missed it, Moats ran a redlight (after checking for traffic) when trying to get to the hospital before his mother-in-law died.  The lady was literally on her death bed and he was doing what he could just to have a couple more minutes with her.  As Moats went to get out of his car officer Robert Powell gave him more than just a hard time and wouldn’t let him go inside the hospital.  (video link: http://www.dallasnews.com/video/dallasnews/hp/index.html?nvid=345572).  Moats mother ended up frickin’ dying while he was in the parking lot.  In no way would I ever correlate this to “protecting and serving.”

Zach Thomas has another incident to report about Mr. Powell.  His former wife was pulled over after making an illegal U-Turn and issued 5 tickets.  Yeah, she did something wrong but Powell went to the length to damn near pull a gun on his former Mother-In-Law.  It’s pretty obvious that Powell certainly isn’t one of the states “Finest” and is actually a big piece of shit on a power trip.  There’s a good chance a lot of people would have just tried to go into the hospital and got shot or tazered but Moats tried to play it by the cards and paid a grand price.  Powell issued an apology but it was just another one of those pre-written statements or at least it sounded like it.  Officer Robert Powell, you are a piece of shit.  Good day.

Non-NFL Note/NCAA Tourney
unc125Well, I have to say I’m pretty happy with my first annual DeviantKnowledge bracket. I’ve managed to pick two of the Final Four and UNC is looking like a great pick to win it all.  Michigan State seems like a team that is really hungry and looking to take a bite out of just about anyone with UConn left standing in their way.  My only concern would that Michigan State hasn’t put up more than 74 in this tournament and UConn can really light it up at times.  Really great chance for a good match up of Michigan State’s tough D against UConn’s offense.  On the other side of things North Carolina has been looking totally unstoppable and is playing well as a team.  Obviously, ‘Nova has come this far and isn’t about to back down but I’m just not sure they’ll be able to take down UNC.  Actually, I don’t think anyone is going to be taking down UNC and I’m going to say it’s Mich St and UNC with UNC winning it all.
