T-Owned
Turn out the lights, the party’s over. The party that was TO being in Dallas, that is. As of this morning the Cowboys have cut Terrell Owens and are moving on with their lives. Ownership and coaches must have felt that TO had become too much of a distraction to deal with. The neat part about all this is both sides, Jerry Jones and TO, got T-Owned in the end. It’s a good bit of a laughing matter, really. What does this mean for the Cowboys as they move forward? Where might Owens end up? Read on for the q0wnage.
Jerry Jones got T-Owned
Can you q0wn the Owner? Yeah, and Owens did a really good job of it. First, Jones was drawn to TO. Jerry was so sound in his decision to bring in TO that he started handing out popcorn during meetings and interviews. Production on the field was excellent for Owens his first couple of years and that’s all “Capt Facelift” wanted to see. Yeah, the numbers are excellent with double-digit touchdowns every season but Jones certainly turned a blind eye to the amount of dropped passes and the critical possessions they came on. Enamored isn’t quite a strong enough word for the feeling the Owner had before becoming the Ownee. Dallas signed Owens on to a 4 year $34 million deal last summer and now are going to be eating a lot of that. Owens will leave with a lot of money and Jerry JOwned will have an extra $9.6 million counting against his salary cap this year.
Jones thought he might have tamed the beast some with TO even emotionally supporting his teammates at
times but when things got a little rough Jerry got to see the monster he fed. It wasn’t too long into last season that there were constant complaints about getting the ball, the offense as a whole, and even coaches. It was a circus just about every week as was evidence when Ed Werder of ESPN setup camp in Dallas Cowboys HQ. That, of course, resulted in a story breaking out of “He-said she-said” and Owens calling Werder a liar on live TV. Jones has always been friendly with the media so I can’t imagine that really sat well with him. Jerry, it’s okay, we all need to take a step back once and awhile and just admit, “Hey, I was wrong.”

TO got T-Owned
Owned by yourself? Yes, that’s actually what happened here. It’s not too often that you are q0wning yourself unless you’re a total n00b but Owens is the opposite so that makes this nearly EPIC pwnage. It was easy. Easy to become too confident and comfortable, that is. Owens, in a lot of ways, did the same thing that Jones did but only from his perspective. TO put the work on the field count and earned his new contract. The whole thing was celebrated in rare fashion with a HUGE tub of popcorn and a press conference that seemed more reality TV than reality.
Fast forward to the next season and Owens must of felt like he was king of the world. He was getting the ball thrown to him like crazy but then things slowed down. Meetings with the media resulted in critcism of coaches, players, and even the media itself. He was just going off anytime anyone was listening that he wanted the ball. Rumors of a locker room split remained exactly that, rumors, but it was evident that Owens felt he could say anything at anytime and it was okay. While he was bitching about everything the team was agreeing with him! How in the world could anything bad happen to TO at this point? Well, Stephen Jones, Jerry Jones son, happened. Stephen Jones is the one rumored to really push for Owens release and Jerry really does listen to his kid. As a result, Owens now realizes he is not untouchable and T-Owned himself right out of Dallas. “He was just in shock,” is what I saw reported on Owens status.
PWNT!
Where does TO go from here?
Philadelphia! Ha, no. There is a lot of speculation about Oakland. The fans there would probably love the guy and it could very well bring the Raiders back into the mainstream media for more than just “Al Davis is an idiot.” Sadly, I really don’t see this happening. If it did, it would have to be for a ton of money. I just can’t picture TO lowering himself so much to go to such a poor franchise. Yes, back in the day the Raiders were a thing of lore but now they are just a bore.
Jerry Jones did it right and waited until Washington and New York (Giants) sunk a ton of money into free agency. Fearing that one of these conference rivals might pick him up I think it’s really why they waited so long and why no one was allowed to talk. Really, quite a strategic move. I will say though, it wouldn’t surprise me if either of those teams somehow worked something out for Owens to sign there. Snyder, in Washington, is probably wetting himself even at the slight possibility and is very creative with contracts. The Giants are without Plaxico so they really have a need but it stops there.
However, I think one team stands out to me above the rest and is getting overlooked; the Ravens. Supposedly, TO was really pushing for Dallas to seriously look at Ray Lewis so there is a connection there with a huge team leader. Also, the Ravens receiving core really isn’t that great and definitely lacking in explosiveness. If Owens can do anything right it’s run, and fast. He would be a good fit in Baltimore.
How about the Cowboys?
This is it. This could be the year. With Captain Distraction gone it will be interesting to see but my gut tells me that the team actually plays like a team this year. Dallas is going to resign Ware and find another safety to replace Roy Williams so I don’t see that being an issue. Sure, their recievers could take a small hit but next year is going to be a lot more about the running game than anything. Felix Jones will be a threat out of the back field and let’s not forget Marion the Barbarian and Tashard Choice. There is still a ton of talent on that offense without Terrell Owens or any other replacement. The real key for the Cowboys is getting their young corner backs to step up along with bettering their secondary.

It’s the exact same story everywhere he goes. As an Indianapolis fan, the comparison I draw is the Jeff George saga. George is one of the most gifted quarterbacks to step on a football field in the last 25 years, yet his attitude doomed every team he played for to failure. At least TO was able to get a team TO the Superbowl. He’ll land somewhere, but the TO investment is looking worse than sinking your money into GM stock.
