Cutler to Chicago! Denver gets a Farm!

Whelp, it’s over and just beginning at the same time!  Jay Cutler will be landing in Chicago with Kyle Orton and two first round picks on the way to Denver.  Who has won in this?  Well, I’m not really sure but I’m going to attempt to break it down in this column.  Also, more opinion on why I think McDaniels and the Bronco’s are “to blame” even though I think this is all been orchestrated from the beginning for the most part.  Conspiracy theory?  No, not exactly.

It was all a Scheme…
With all of the showmanship put up by the new, young, Bronco’s coach I really think all of his outcries about Cutler were just smoke and mirrors.  Yes, that’s right, I don’t think McDaniels EVER wanted anything to do with Cutler.   I know I am rehashing but humor me.

McDaniels tries to trade Cutler for Cassel.  Not a big deal until he denies it.  A veteran coach would have known better but the worst part is that he lied straight to Cutler.  Once he denies the trade he is then caught tells Cutler he’s just an expendable as anyone else.  So, after all of this he tells anyone that will listen how much he wants Cutler to stay and supposedly tells Cutler the same only to be set on trading him a week later?  I’m not buying it and neither should Denver fans although they seem to be.  If you add it all up it really seems likeMcDaniels is trying to “save face” which has, unfortunately, been working.

After all of McDaniels dealings the only thing I keep reading about is how Cutler brought this on himself.  Brought it on himself?  Cutler went and asked for assurance that he was going to still be a starting QB come training camp and was lied to.  It wasn’t until after that he asked for a trade and he’s now saying it’s ultimately not what he wanted.  Why should I believe Cutler and not McDaniels?  Easy, Cutler hasn’t been proved to have lied at all (at this point) and his position is directly relateable.  No one wants to hear that their job is on the line and then be lied to. Especially not after being at a spot for so long and putting in a ton of time to improve yourself.  Putting it on Cutler is media bullshit, end story.

Chicago’s Loss and Gain
My only real problem is Chicago sold the farm to do it.  Two first round picks (one this year), a third round pick (this year), a fifth round pick, and Kyle Orton.  Holy fuck is about the only thing I can say.  I’m not so sure any QB in the NFL, aside from Manning, is worth that.  Kyle Orton is just Chicago getting rid of unwanted goods but it’s a solid pickup for Denver.  With this much being dumped into Cutler he HAS to pan out in Chicago to be a top 8 QB to really get their value.

From a strict personnel standpoint the Bears have finally got what they need.  Cutler can launch the ball anywhere on the field, he’s an on-field leader, and top notch talent.  Kyle Orton wasn’t a long term answer so I see no problem with packaging him into the deal.  I don’t know how you would be a player for the Bears right now and not be excited about this.  The only problem I even see is Cutler will make bad throws and still needs a steady hand to guide him and I’m not so sure the Bears have the right people in place for that.  Let’s see what happens.

Why I Bother with this Column
I read a lot of sports columns and very few I actually like with regularity.  Dr. Z from SI.com wrote a most excellent one but he recently had a couple of strokes and is fighting to get his life back to a livable standard.  I wish that guy all the best.  I can’t say that I have any type of dipping into locker room goings and I certainly have no numbers relating to NFL players but some of these guys crack me up.

Peter King is a solid columnist but I think his take on this is way out of line.  It’s easy to put all the blame on “the kid” and point at Cutler.  He totally pushes aside the lying and backstage voodoo that went on and really thinks he knows exactly what happened.

“Kid, either you or your agent asked to be traded after Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates left the organization, and your agent asked for a trade again on March 14. Come on. You can only cry wolf so many times before you finally get called on it.”

So, in other words, King, you have no clue as to what really happened other than Bus Cook asking for a trade on the 14th?  “You or your agent” is certainly 100% assurance of exactly what happened.  What about McDaniels crying wolf here?  Maybe King knows more than what he can tell us but based off of everything I can find reported this is at least a 50/50 split and not all on Cutler.  Don’t try to feed us that crap.  Also, why take such a tone with that comment like Cutler is such a low life punk kid?  There is no reason for that.  Not when you are on a national network.  King really just comes off as a “big shot” here and a lot of media babble mouths are close to the same.  Disappointing to say the least.

Till next week!
