T2: Judgment Day: The Skynet Edition– This Week’s Deviant Knowledge DVD Pick.

t2Still stinging from the slap in the face that is Terminator Salvation? Here’s something bound to make you feel a little better. T2: Judgment Day the Skynet Edition on Bluray has also been out for a couple of weeks now and it’s a beautiful way to really make yourself feel even worse about T4. If you haven’t tossed a dozen or so bucks at McG yet to see his blurred vision of the War Against the Machines, I can promise after watching T2 again that there is not one solitary shot in Salvation that holds a candle to the opening sequences of T2’s vision of Los Angeles 2029 A.D. and the scarred John Conner watching decimated human infantry getting fried mercilessly in the 1991 vision of that cool yet depressing future.

Terminator Salvation: Officially The “Feel Disappointed” Movie of the Summer

t41shetFirst I guess I should warn anyone reading this review considering Terminator Salvation that I am a mild apologist for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Yes, I enjoyed that unapologetically even though I fully admit that it was a very pale followup to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which I still consider one the greatest sci-fi action flicks of all time as well as number one on the list of most influential digital effects films of all time in the article I’ve been picking away at for the past 4 months chronicling the most influential digital effects films of all time. Okay, I’ll get around to finishing that article this summer. In any case, this makes it very difficult to reconcile the fact that even though I think Terminator Salvation is a much better movie than T3, I have some serious problems with it.

V 2010: Leapin’ Lizards! The First Look is Promising!

newvBack in January we reported that ABC had greenlit a remake of the classic 1980s mini-series V. You can read my thoughts on the original work here V - Classic 80s Sci-fi Gets the Go Ahead for a Remake. I also expressed some reservations that the green light was on a remake rather than continuation or closure of the original story. I may have been hasty in that judgment after getting our first peek. ABC television has released some of the first trailers and promotional materials for the series and it’s not what I expected.

Angels and Demons and Paratrooper Priests and Antimatter Bombs and Catholic Shame…

angels1sheetSince I’m not actually reviewing Ron Howard’s The DaVinci Code here I can freely admit that I caught it on cable and wandered aimlessly from it. It just never hooked me enough to keep from making multiple trips to the bathroom, kitchen, liquor store, whatever. With Angels and Demons, it seemed to have all the elements that turned me off of that film souped up on steroids. However, about 45 minutes or so into this 2 hour and 20 minute epic journey from common sense I was beaten into submission by the charm of Tom Hanks and the medicine ball sized-testicles of screenwriters David Koepp and friends who I can only guess smoked large quantities of controlled substances while pounding out this thing.

Star Trek: The Quick and Sleazy Gift Guide for Overhyped Trekkies, Trekkers and Geeks

shipOne of the great truisms of fandom of any entertainment property is that when the fuse gets lit on fanaticism after a long lull it spurs lapsed fans into child like spending sprees. Star Trek is no different and with the new film garnering rave reviews and big box office bucks it’s prime time for classic Trek fans to get parted with their hard earned cash. Here’s a cross section of some of the big budget and small budget goodies that are hanging out there for you.

Lost: The Incident Closes Season 5 with 2 Hours of Weirdness and More Questions than Answers

jacobandfriendWhile it wouldn’t be fair to say that I didn’t actually get at least as much if not more guilty enjoyment from the Lost finale more than I did from the season 4 conclusion it leaves the show teetering on the edge of insanity and one push the wrong way could send things about 4 feet to the right of too crazy to enjoy. The real question is that with only a handful more than a dozen hours left in this 6 year saga are ever we going to have more questions answered than raised from week to week? But then again, that’s what the fun is all about.

Monday Mania - May 11th, 2009 - Favre!, Cowboys Practice Facility, Rams, Manny, Hockey?

banner

The draft has come and gone so now what are we going to talk about?  Surprisingly, the same old things with different takes!  Well, kind of.  The media seems to get pretty bored in the summer time which means we often to get hear one news item repeated over and over with the same thoughts and opinions.  Interestingly enough, it has happened again with this Brett Favre ”Stuff.”  I want to give everyone my take on that since I have yet to hear a media person follow my opinion.  Also, what happened in Dallas?  St. Louis’s defense was terrible last year so they decided to make it worse.  Let’s not forget some non-football talk with WoManny Ramirez and thoughts on a darn good hockey game.

Star Trek: These are the Voyages of the Starship Enterprise, and Just Maybe the Best Voyage Yet.

trekbanner1There can really be no denying that the amount of things that had to go right for JJ Abrams to pull off what I’ve witnessed this past day put his odds of success at pretty close to a million to one. To be able to cobble together the perfect recasting of one of the most beloved acting ensembles in television history was alone a daunting task. To find the right script is always a difficult task for any film project. Now, how do you put together a slam bang action sci-fi flick that will enthrall casual audiences as well as please some of the most finicky fan bases of any cult franchise?

Lost: Follow the Leader - Season’s Best is Saved for Second to Last as We Prepare to Nuke the Island.

coollostcastbiggerWhile it wouldn’t be fair to Lost to say that I haven’t enjoyed the hell out of season 5 so far, I’d be first to admit that the story arc seemed to drag, get distracted and lapse into some odd silliness here and there. I didn’t care for the early season dwelling on the children issues or the whole voodoo ritual that brought Locke back from the dead and got the 5/6ths of the Oceanic Six back to the island. However, It would be incredibly unfair to not admit that Follow the Leader is probably the most entertaining episode of the season if not in the best in several seasons.
