Monday Mania - May 11th, 2009 - Favre!, Cowboys Practice Facility, Rams, Manny, Hockey?

The draft has come and gone so now what are we going to talk about?  Surprisingly, the same old things with different takes!  Well, kind of.  The media seems to get pretty bored in the summer time which means we often to get hear one news item repeated over and over with the same thoughts and opinions.  Interestingly enough, it has happened again with this Brett Favre ”Stuff.”  I want to give everyone my take on that since I have yet to hear a media person follow my opinion.  Also, what happened in Dallas?  St. Louis’s defense was terrible last year so they decided to make it worse.  Let’s not forget some non-football talk with WoManny Ramirez and thoughts on a darn good hockey game.
My Take on Favre
What would a football off-season be without 10,000 reporters all talking about Brett Favre.  Favre has been playing forever and possibly not playing forever as well.  I mean that only in what is reported every season about retirement or a trade or anything else that happens to be “Brett.”  It really hasn’t bothered me that much until recently.  I have no real problem with Favre or anything he has done but only the media.  Let me explain.

favresAll I have been hearing about on the radio and news channels is how everyone thinks Favre needs to do X (usually retire), he’s tarnished his legacy, he’s selfish, and he needs to clear things up.  Blah, blah, blah, shut the hell up.  You see, the media should be punching themselves in the face about now because of many reasons.  First, they’ve created all of this.  All of the stories and reporting on Favre aren’t done by him for him it’s the media reporting crap.  Second, who the hell are the and y?  Honestly, these guys don’t seem to understand they are talking about a person’s life.  Brett Favre has always been about playing football and that’s about it.  If he were to totally retire and miss a season that’s probably his career for the rest of his entire life.  How can you blame a person who is facing that decision to try all of the left over outlets to try and continue playing.  Even if it meant unretiring so what.  Favre shouldn’t be demonized for wanting to play.  This isn’t a “Oh, it’s Favre he can do what he wants” it’s just anyone facing that decision.  If there is a chance to play then why not take it.

So, everyone get off of Favre’s nut sack and quit this squandering about his legacy.  Favre’s legacy, in my opinion, is almost cemented.  There is not a single ounce of tarnish with the Jets season or if he would play again.  The only thing that could really tarnish it would finding out he took ‘roids or something to that affect.  Even if you’re thought is that this makes Favre less “Favre” who the hell cares.  Again, these reporters simple minded opinions about retirement are pure crap.  They will be writing until they are 75.  #4 cares about playing football and who can fault a football player for that?

Cowboys Practice Facility
My first thoughts on this are, “Wow, they got really lucky.”  Honestly, I thought a lot of people were going to be listed as deceased with a whole frakkin’ building falling on them.  Fortunately, not many people were in the facility when it went down.  Rich Behm, a member of the training staff, was the most seriously hurt being paralyzed from the waist down.  The other serious injury was to Special Teams Coach, Joe DeCamillis who was just released from the hospital today after successful surgery to repair a fractured vertebrae.

Cowboys Canopy CollapseThis collapse has brought out some very interesting points.  One, the builder of this facility has has 3 other buildings of similar styles collapse.  A key point in this is that no other facility in the area was affected anywhere near like this one.  Two, who, if anyone, is at fault?  The state of Texas is looking into the facility and collapse.  In question is the engineering involved, if it passed inspections, and/or if there if negligence on behalf of the Cowboys organization or the builder.  I have a feeling that this is going to be something we keep hearing about and that the new facility is going to built by someone else.  I also wonder if this is going to prompt the NFL or Players Union to form it’s own committee or contract clauses that enforces inspections of facilities in the future. Between this place collapsing and the Cleveland Browns being unable to keep staph infections from happening the new CBA could have a lot of items relating to player safety dealing with facilities.

St. Blewit
pisaThe Rams were a really bad team last year and especially on defense.  St. Louis finished the season as giving up the 5th most yard per game (371.9) and allowing the 2nd most points per game at 29.1.  That’s right, the only team that gave up more point than the Rams were the lowly, lowly, LOWLY Lions.  I would think this would prompt a clubhouse clean out of the least productive and unmotivated players but St. Louis is just on their own time.  After leading the team in tackles by 20 and being the only player on the team to have more than 100 tackles last season Pisa Tinoisamoa was rewarded by being cut.  Really?  Yes, really.  Steve Spagnulo is said to like “big linebackers” and Pisa is only 6′1″ 220.  You know, there’s this guy named Zach Thomas who is about that size.  What a stupid move.

Non-NFL Notes

WoManny
tranramI guess the long hair isn’t just a Manny thing.  If somehow you haven’t been informed Manny Ramirez of the LA Dodgers tested positive for a banned substance.  The substance is HCB and is used to control estrogen levels generally following performance enhancers.  Yes, that’s right, Manny is gonna be called “Tranny” for quite awhile.  Ramirez has been banned for 50 games by baseball (so a week right?) and is currently blaming his doctor for giving him an RX for it.  After signing a $25 mill/year contract you gotta be better than that, Manny.  Ramirez is a “leader” in the LA dugout and his career is now gonna be marked forever.  It’s looking like Jose Canseco’s revelations should be safe bets at this point since he hasn’t been wrong.  With the outings of A-Roid and TranRam how much worse could it get for baseball?  Again, I still feel there needs to be lifetime bans to actually initiate a real change.  50 games is just a bit of a vacation for these guys while they still pocket more money than they will be spending.

Caps v Guins
ovechkinHockey is a sport I used to love to play but could never really watch much like basketball.  Although, I still remember the Blackhawks of yesterday with Eddie Belfour at net, Chris Chelios, Jeremy Roenick and company racking it up.  I managed to watch the Penguins take on the Capitols in Washington on Saturday and have to admit I really enjoyed it.  First, it was a hell of a game being decided in overtime by a shot that was deflected off a stick.  With having not watched hockey in so long it seems like the game has gotten to be much faster with more skill and less hitting.  Now, I could be wrong, or it could be just those two teams but the pace seemed quicker to me is all I’m saying.  Good chance I tune in again.
