“SHOOT HIM!” Worst Photo Idea Ever: DragonCon 2009

Dragon*Con 2009 is officially over and in spite of my best efforts to get updates every 30 minutes throughout the con I’ve tried to pace it by not writing since day one.

I’ve got a brief series of articles that I’ll be posting over the next week or two and I’m trying to not dwell too much on the things that are pretty dull, mainly panels. While panels with celebs are cool to attend, they are pretty much not good fodder for articles. Celebs pretty much have half a dozen cool stories that become public knowledge after the first time they go on Letterman. I think this time I’ll limit things to the photo at hand: Officially the worst photo idea of Dragon*Con 2009 which I simply will call “Shoot Him!”

After stumbling upon another photo seeker asking a pretty good looking Wesley Snipes/Blade to pose for a photo, I thought I’d stop and grab the shot, too. From behind me us comes a fan suggestion: “Shoot the Kid!” The small child that happened to have walked up to see the costume suddenly became part of the photo op. The Blade fan was a bit hesitant at first, but the thoughtful con-attendee that called the suggestion reassured him that it was fine because “it would be funny.” The photo at the top of this article occurred while we were trying to get a couple shots of this, the kid suddenly became very uncomfortable and started hurrying away while being called to by Mr. Thoughtful “No, it’s okay kid, he’s not REALLY going to shoot you.” He talked the kid into sheepishly coming back once or twice. Of course, rather than telling the kid to go back to the safety of his parents, my inner demon admittedly was thinking “this is awful, that poor kid…hope he sticks just long enough for one good shot…photo shot that is.” In any case, the look on the kid’s face is pretty damned genuine.

Also on the agenda before I actually do any real writing about Adam Savage, BSG stars, or my 7 seconds of quality time with Shatner I’ll throw a couple of last minute photos out. Check back in the next 48 hours for rather interesting video interview regarding the new 3-D Gaming monitor that’s just getting retail release (and is actually much better than you might think).

frstklingonBiggest Surprise of Day One - 3.5 hours before spotting our first Klingon.
I was amazed. I warned my son about the Klingons and the intense fervent fans that can speak fluently in this imaginary language, but it was 11:30AM on Friday before we spotted our first Klingon and we had absolutely no indication that they were trying to speak the fake language.

pimpvaderBest Darth Vader of Day Two - Pimp Vader with his “Ho” and illegit’ son.
At least one more good Vader on day three, but this one was reasonably humorous on day two.

indyescalatorIt’s Not the Age, Honey, it’s the MileageI have this intellectual fetish which causes me to think seeing fictional characters on escalators is damned funny, and this was no exception. The thought of Indiana Jones on an escalator just causes me to smile. I actually got much pleasure hanging around escalators and just seeing how weird thinks could get.

Alright, I’m out until I get out of this sleazy hotel in the mountains and get back into my own home tomorrow afternoon. What’s the deal? Should I hit 9 on Wednesday or continue to get behind on new releases?
