Video Clip: The IZ3D Gaming Monitor — Commonly Asked Questions

logo-iz3dDuring my recent trek into the massive crowds at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, I happened to stumble on a demo of the IZ3D monitor which hit retail in the past few months. The demo was impressive and I had the chance to talk to Aaron “Warface” Rapp with IZ3D while he did some gaming on it with Left4Dead and World of Warcraft
.
Obviously, the 3D is not able to be viewed in an internet vid, but I did have a chance to ask some burning questions about the monitor including how the drivers work, how it impacts game performance and online gaming.

While the video covers these questions, I have to say that I was initially impressed with Left4Dead. The 3D was solid, it doesn’t strain the eyes, and it does add a dimension to the game that exceeded my expectations. However, when Aaron booted World of Warcraft I was blown away by how incredibly cool the game looked. The 3D environments of WOW were served very well by the technology and I was specifically impressed by little nuances like how players approaching from behind you actually felt like they were coming from behind you as opposed to giving some weird peripheral clipping as they came into frame. The colors and textures of WOW stayed very much in tact it was a gorgeous demo.

Overall, I’m not advocating or panning the IZ3D monitor, but I can honestly say this new tech is definitely on my “Guy Radar.” For my own evil purposes I did ask Aaron how it was looking on the Unreal Engine. His response was interesting stating that UT2004 is one of the most successful games out there in the environment and UT3 looks incredible as well, though he didn’t have those games to demo with them.

In any case, if you have any curiosity about this little guy (the monitor, not Mr. Rapp) then I hope this answers some of the burning questions and curiosities you may have about it.

Now that you say Warcraft looks amazing I’m, of course, really interested.

These things are going for $310 right now at 22″ size at Newegg. I do not thing that is a bad price at all but man a regular 22″ is like $150 these days. Still, very well priced for what it is doing. I’d have to upgrade my vid card though… haha

Looking forward to these aroudn $200 in a couple years.
