DragonCon 2009: Costumes and General Weirdness

superflash2One of the most phenomenal things about any Con is the vast amount of weirdness that comes out of the woodwork. Seemingly normal people use the occasion to costume themselves as their favorite fictional–or in some cases non-fictional– characters. In my years of going to cons I’ve noticed a distinct turn in this trend. As with this picture of the Flash and Superman, this supports my life long research into whether ANY human being actually looks good in tights.

“SHOOT HIM!” Worst Photo Idea Ever: DragonCon 2009

Dragon*Con 2009 is officially over and in spite of my best efforts to get updates every 30 minutes throughout the con I’ve tried to pace it by not writing since day one.
bladelarger

I’ve got a brief series of articles that I’ll be posting over the next week or two and I’m trying to not dwell too much on the things that are pretty dull, mainly panels. While panels with celebs are cool to attend, they are pretty much not good fodder for articles. Celebs pretty much have half a dozen cool stories that become public knowledge after the first time they go on Letterman. I think this time I’ll limit things to the photo at hand: Officially the worst photo idea of Dragon*Con 2009 which I simply will call “Shoot Him!”

DragonCon 2009: Day One - Best Costume So Far, Initial Thoughts, and an Unexpected Gift from Above.

elvisDay One - DK Pick for Best Costume: Sith Elvis!
Any of the literally dozens of loyal readers we have at Deviant Knowledge probably are at least aware of the the annual Labor Day idiocy that happens in Atlanta, GA each year called Dragon*Con. For those not familiar, formerly a smaller and more narrowly targeted affair, it’s now described on their own website as “the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the US.” This year is my first opportunity to attend and after 14 hours on day one I was stunned by how huge and well run of a program this is so far. I’ve been to many cons over the years: GenCon, Star Wars Celebrations, several Trek, Doctor Who and general Sci-Fi cons and so far this seems to be about the most well-oiled of any of them–of course, hell is bound to ensue as the weekend hits.

Star Trek: The Quick and Sleazy Gift Guide for Overhyped Trekkies, Trekkers and Geeks

shipOne of the great truisms of fandom of any entertainment property is that when the fuse gets lit on fanaticism after a long lull it spurs lapsed fans into child like spending sprees. Star Trek is no different and with the new film garnering rave reviews and big box office bucks it’s prime time for classic Trek fans to get parted with their hard earned cash. Here’s a cross section of some of the big budget and small budget goodies that are hanging out there for you.

The Guild: Comedic Web Series for Recovering Guilders and Active Addicts

I have recently started playing World of Warcraft which can and will be another column but it turned my head to some videos I have ignored for far too long; The Guild! If I get into a game or anything else and really start to enjoy it I find myself seeking out as much as I can in related material. It just so happens that The Guild was one of the featured listings on the Xbox Live Video Marketplace or I probably would have missed it. Maybe non-gamers or even non-MMORPGer’s might not really care for some of The Guild but I think it warrants a look.

Ricardo Montalban: “KAHHHHHHN!” is Dead

Ricardo Montalban is one of the most unique and memorable actors of the past 50 years or so. His roles in film and television cross the entire spectrum of entertainment. For me, he has the honor of not only appearing in more than one of my top 20 or so favorite movies of all time, but also in one of my bottom five most hated films ever.

5 DVD Gift Ideas for Sci-Fi Geeks

I was not going to do a “buy this” article this year and it may even be very very late but I thought I’d make a minimal list of some great gift ideas.

1. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy and Star Wars Trilogy - $35/piece
At $35 a piece these are a pretty good buy.  Anyone who is a real Star Wars fan is going to want all of the movies even if they don’t like them.

For the uber geek throw in the book set too at another $30

Dear Axl Rose…Shut Up!

Ok, for those of you who do not know that back story, here it is. After years of delays (13 to be exact), Guns N Roses announced in 2007, that their new album Chinese Democracy would hit shelves in late 2008. Dr. Pepper (who is owned by Snapple) decided to do a give-away. If the album actually hit stores in 2008, Dr. Pepper would give a free bottle to everyone in the US. Well, the album released on Nov. 23rd. Dr. Pepper said it would make good on the deal. The opted for what I think is the easiest way to do it. They were going to post a coupon on their website. Well we all know where this is going to lead. The server got overwhelmed and went down. But here is the best part. The lawyers for G N R are pissing an moaning because Dr. Pepper is running a “online scam”. You can read the whole article here (article). I am just going to point out a few things that I find ironic (or moronic as it may be).
