Finally, the long awaited part 5 and final installment of our Windows Home Server series here at DeviantKnowledge. This chapter will go over administration tasks and Add-In’s for your server. To really get the most out of your server it is important to really understand what it is that you’re working with and get some good tools to help. While Home Server is very capable by itself there are some things that we can do to make it easier.

Windows Home Server Part 4 - Install / Networking / Basic Intro
Here in part 4 we have gone from learning about why we want a server, how we are going to go about getting a server, building a server, and are now setting up the software for our server. A little bit of a journey for some but well worth it. As a matter of fact, Telos in our user forums, has already setup his own server and has reported Windows Home Server as “Rocking.” So, the bottom line here is, if you want a server that rocks in your house just keep on reading.
Install
To be honest, I almost was going to skip this because it is the easiest Windows install I’ve ever done. If you have installed XP, Windows 2000, or any Windows Server 2000 or newer this install is cake. Let me give you a rundown though…

Windows Home Server Part 3 - Low/High End Builds
Part 3 in our projected 5 part series is here to help everyone pick out some hardware for their budget. This was originally slated to include installation and networking setup but I decided to make that part 4 since it really wasn’t fitting here. For the builds I will be using Newegg to price out two new servers. This section is really all about actually making it happen after realizing you need a home server too.

I gotta admit, this was actually quite a bit harder than I thought it would be. Well, the main reason was the budget restraint of $500 for the lower end build. Also, there are many things that can be changed with my “high end” build but it’s more an example of what the two budgets can lead to.

Windows Home Server Part 2 - Hardware / Network / Installation Notes
This is the second in a series of Windows Home Server articles that will be on this site. Right now, I’m thinking it will be a 5 part series and if you missed the first then go ahead and check out Windows Home Server Part 1 now. Here in part 2 we are going to be discussing all the hardware that you need to get started, what to buy, networking, and some brief install notes. I will also be giving an overview of the server I use at home with things I like and would do differently or will be upgrading.
It Starts with the Network
Windows Home Server is basically an easy to use but powerful Network Attached Storage system (NAS). The key to this is that it’s attached to the network and accessed that way. Well, when you have one bridge to an island that a lot of people want to get to you should make sure it’s big enough. It is easy and fairly cheap to get your network upgraded at home so lets look at what we need.

Windows Home Server Part 1 - Who/What/Why
With many people having several computers and other devices that share media a server could be a great and logical addition being overlooked. Ohc’mon now, I can just hear the pulpit breeding with “Yeah, if you’re a computer nerd” and the chants of “That sounds expensive.” Let’s not over look the usual question of “Why? Why do I need or want that?” To be honest, these are mostly fair questions and until recently it hasn’t been easy or cheap. Now, it is both and very powerful at that.
The Who
This article is for anyone savvy enough to install an operating system and has a basic understanding of computer storage and networking. If you have added a hard disk to your computer, formatted it, and shared a folder you are well within the scope of this. Even if you haven’t done these things but are interested in how a server for your home might make media more accessible and safer, keep reading. There are companies making pre-built boxes at reasonable prices that would be a perfect fit. The second best thing about Windows Home Server is how simple it is to use (the first is the easy expansion technique).
