Insert Lame “Who Watches the Watchmen” Joke Here
The film version of Watchmen does its level best to stay true to the look of the graphic novel. They expend considerable effort getting the costumes right, having the characters look like their drawn counterparts, perfectly duplicating the props, even framing some of the shots to match the panels in the book.
It’s just everything else they get wrong.

Watchmen: Three Hours and Twelve Dollars Later…
The clock struck midnight and March 6, 2009 finally arrived. It was a day that had spent time in doubt with hostilities between the studios competing over the film’s rights brewing more hotly than the U.S. – Soviet relations that are the central plot device for the Watchmen story. But it all worked out because the two media giants found a new friendship when the dollar figure was right. Any fan of Watchmen would have done well to temper expectations, but judging by the already packed Imax screen showing at 11:15 last night, a full 46 minutes before the projector rolled, that wasn’t going to happen. So it’s time to assess the damage.

Who Pays the Watchmen?
Turns out we’ll be watching the Watchmen this March after all. Seems Warners and Fox have settled their dispute for an undisclosed amount of cash. Warners keeps distribution rights and Fox will receive an upfront monetary settlement and a portion of the box office. Here’s the official statement:
“Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture Watchmen in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography. Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith in defending against those claims Warner Bros. and Fox, like all Watchmen fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film’s March 6 release in theatres.”
So Fox gets a wad of money, Warners gets some extra publicity, the fans get their movie on time. Could it be for once everybody wins?

With Watchmen in serious jeopardy of a release delay everything about it starts to look a little better. Below is the kick-ass Japanese trailer for the movie which is 100% better than the US/English Second Trailer that’s been around for a while. The Japanese version has almost completely different footage from the English version, and ultimately is much more geek-inspiring.
So what are the possible implications of the legal mess that’s brewing and the future of this film?

Who Watches the Watchmen? Might be Nobody.
Despite Scuzzbuster’s earlier assertion that you shouldn’t off yourself before 2009, one of his reasons may no longer be enough to keep you breathing. According the The New York Times, it seems the judge in the Fox/Warner Bros. Watchmen rights case has made a preliminary ruling, prior to the scheduled January trial date, that Twentieth Century Fox does indeed own a copyright interest in the film.
